LEGALIZATION OF STAY IN POLAND FOR EU STUDENT

🇪🇺 INSTRUCTIONS FOR AN EU STUDENT COMING TO POLAND (GDAŃSK)

1. Entry into Poland

No visa is required.
Citizens of EU countries can enter Poland with a valid passport or national ID card.
You can freely cross the border and travel throughout the country.

2. Stay up to 3 months

If your stay is up to 3 months, you don’t need to register your residence.
You only need to have your ID card or passport with you and a document confirming your student status.

3. Stay longer than 3 months

If you plan to stay in Poland for more than 3 months (for example, for a full academic year), you must register your residence as an EU citizen.

👉 Where to apply:
Pomeranian Voivodeship Office in Gdańsk
Department for Foreigners
ul. Okopowa 21/27, 80-810 Gdańsk
www.gov.pl/web/uw-pomorski

Required documents:

  1. Completed application form for registration of residence of an EU citizen (available on the website)
  2. Valid passport or ID card
  3. Confirmation from the university (Medical University of Gdańsk)
  4. Proof of sufficient financial means – e.g. bank statement, scholarship confirmation, or declaration
  5. Health insurance – e.g. European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or other valid insurance
  6. Proof of accommodation in Gdańsk – e.g. rental agreement or dormitory confirmation

After registration

You will receive a certificate of registration of residence.
It is not a residence card, but it officially confirms your legal stay in Poland.

4. Address registration (Meldunek)

Anyone staying in Poland for more than 30 days should register their address (called zameldowanie).

You can do this at the district/city office corresponding to your place of residence (e.g. Wrzeszcz, Oliwa, etc. in Gdańsk).

Required documents:

  • Passport or ID card
  • Proof of legal right to the apartment (rental contract or dormitory confirmation)

5. Health insurance

The easiest option: bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
With it, you are entitled to public healthcare in Poland under the same conditions as Polish citizens.

You may also buy additional private insurance, if your university requires it.

6. PESEL number (Polish personal identification number)

Not mandatory, but useful for:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Signing a work or rental contract
  • Visiting public healthcare institutions

You can apply for it at the City Hall after registering your address (meldunek).

7. After your studies

When your study period ends, you can leave Poland freely.

If you wish to stay longer (e.g. for an internship or job), you can register your continued stay or apply for a temporary residence permit.
